»Divestment occurs when a church or university or city authority, for example, sells shares in a foreign company because that company does business in South Africa, or does it in an unacceptable fashion. By contrast, disinvestment occurs when the foreign company closes or sells its South African operation and withdraws, repatriating what assets it can« (Orkin 1986, p. 17; emphasis mine).

Banning orders are being replaced by restriction orders so that the government can claim, as one of its reforms, that it no longer bans people. Duncan states that such a clampdown happened in February 1988 (personal communication, September 1988). This legislation was withdrawn due to intense international pressure, but a modified version is expected to be introduced in the near future.
