There is a chronology of the major events in South African history on pages 351-353. Although the Afrikaans phrase die Nasionale Party can accurately be translated as either« the Nationalist Party« or« the National Party,« the latter usage has become increasingly popular as a way to underplay the nationalist values on which the party is based.

The Tribune articles were written from a narrow Cold War perspective and did not note that the United States had been an ally of the Russians and at war with Japan at the time Sorge was caught and executed (1941, 1944). Simmons seemed to equate the two men with Tojo and other Japanese war criminals. Moreover, Simmons accused a leading figure in the Japanese Communist Party, Ito Ritsu, of being the key figure who had been indirectly responsible for the cracking of the spy ring by the Japanese authorities.
